Meet David Vela – Seat #3
Posted On: Aug 28, 2020

David Vela “hit the ground running” when he joined the LACCD Board of Trustees in 2018. Two years later, as he seeks reelection, the Montebello native, public affairs expert, and former school board member marvels at how quickly the time has flown by while also affirming that there is much work still to be done.

“When I became an LACCD trustee, I realized that this board needed someone who understood and could communicate and adhere to shared governance. That’s what I did as chair of the Public Affairs and Legislative Committee,” said Vela. “We know, as trustees, we have to include everyone and I think that’s what we did. At the end of the day, we’re a big family.”

Vela’s career in governance and public service includes time in Sacramento as the chief of staff to the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Labor as well as 10 years spent as a senior deputy to L.A. County Supervisor Gloria Molina.

Vela says he will continue to work to ensure that the transition to remote learning is successful for faculty, staff, and students alike. That means helping everyone get access to the necessary technology. Listening and responding to students from diverse backgrounds is also a priority.

“Remote learning, race relations, equity, and the budget will keep us busy,” Vela said.

“I want the membership of AFT 1521 to know how much I appreciate having their endorsement and being able to prove to myself and to the Guild that I care about their issues,” he added. “The members of AFT are the ones pushing behind the scenes for equity in the district. I appreciate what they do, coming to work every day especially in times like these. It motivates me to continue to be a trustee.”
