Due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, the California Federation of Teachers (Local 1521's state affiliate) will hold its 2021 convention online on March 26-27, 2021. Featuring the theme of “Rise Up, Recover, Rebuild,” the CFT Convention promises to be an uplifting event. The convention, held every two years, is the Federation’s highest governance body, during which delegates shape union policy and positions on issues affecting all members.
At the convention, voting members elect officers of the CFT including the President, Secretary Treasurer and 24 Vice Presidents. Elections will also be held for delegates to the AFT Convention and to the California Labor Federation Convention. The CFT division councils meet and constituent local unions elect officers of each division. Despite the online format, the usual general sessions, speakers, and debates on union resolutions will take place. In 2019, the convention was held at the Biltmore in Los Angeles. In 2014, future U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris addressed convention delegates. For more information and to see highlights of past conventions, visit www.cft.org.
The annual event is open to all CFT members so you can attend any of the sessions, but only elected delegates can vote. You should have received an email from the Guild on how to become a voting delegate. You must submit your name in writing to the Guild office by 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 11. Please submit your nomination form by scanning it and emailing it to rsalazar@aft1521.org.
