I hope your semester is off to a good start.

It’s exciting that we as faculty are central to the changes in the democratic process at our colleges. The opportunity to vote in the March 3 election has been expanded to 11 days to allow more people to vote, and a few of our campuses -- City, Southwest, and Trade -- are hosting voting centers for several days, so you may be able to vote at work. Be sure to tell your students that they can vote where they attend school or at a campus convenient to where they live.

Those of you who teach English and math are well aware of the issues you and your students have faced due to the Chancellor’s Directive on the implementation of AB 705 in our district. We’re working with the Academic Senate to interpret and analyze the preliminary data on enrollment and success rates and to resolve the unintended (and unacceptable) consequences that you have identified.

The candidates for our 2020 Guild Election have submitted their declarations of intention to run for office. Watch your home mail for information on candidate forums on your campus and about voting. If you have moved within the last two years, contact rgonzalez@aft1521.org or call Reyna at our office at (323) 851-1521 to give her your change of address.

By now you know that the Guild has implemented a collective bargaining tool known as “open negotiations.” At this point, we are pleased to report that our decision to use open negotiations has been a good one. Not only does it reflect our capacity to organize, but it also makes the negotiations process transparent. Our team members are laser-focused on the goal of negotiating the best contract we can for our faculty, students and communities. Inviting members to attend sessions has been valuable. They’ve told us how much they’ve learned about the process. Seeing their suggestions woven into our proposals at the table has been rewarding -- many have expressed appreciation that their input was heard. You should have received a schedule sent to your campus email. It’s also posted on the Guild website. I encourage you to attend a session. RSVP if you can, but you’re also welcome to just stop by.

In Solidarity,
Joanne Waddell

AFT 1521 President
